Induction motors variable speed drives diagnosis through rotor resistance monitoring

K. YAHIA, S. ZOUZOU, F. BENCHABANE

Frontiers in Energy 2012, Volume 6, Issue 4,   Pages 420-426 doi: 10.1007/s11708-012-0192-z

Abstract: Induction motor driven by vector control method makes high performance control of torque and speed possible. The decoupling of flux and electromagnetic torque obtained by field orientation depends on the precision and the accuracy of the estimated states. Rotor asymmetries lead to perturbations of air gap flux patterns in induction machines. These perturbations in flux components affect the electromagnetic torque, as well as stator currents and voltages. This paper first investigates the control of the induction motor using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) for a direct field-oriented control. It then studies the broken rotor bars (BRBs) fault by the monitoring the rotor resistance. The hypothesis on which the detection is based is that the apparent rotor resistance of the motor will increase when a rotor bar breaks. The rotor resistance is estimated and compared with its nominal value to detect BRBs fault. The EKF estimates the rotor flux, speed and rotor resistance on line by using only measurements of the stator voltages and currents. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in the cases of load torque perturbation and speed reversion.

Clogging of slurry-shield tunnel-boring machine drives in sedimentary soft rock: A case study

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering doi: 10.1007/s11709-023-0984-8

Abstract: This paper presents a case study of the clogging of a slurry-shield tunnel-boring machine (TBM) experienced during tunnel operations in clay-rich argillaceous siltstones under the Ganjiang River, China. The clogging experienced during tunneling was due to special geological conditions, which had a considerably negative impact on the slurry-shield TBM tunneling performance. In this case study, the effect of clogging on the slurry-shield TBM tunneling performance (e.g., advance speed, thrust, torque, and penetration per revolution) was fully investigated. The potential for clogging during tunnel operations in argillaceous siltstone was estimated using an existing empirical classification chart. Many improvement measures have been proposed to mitigate the clogging potential of two slurry-shield TBMs during tunneling, such as the use of an optimum cutting wheel, a replacement cutting tool, improvements to the circulation flushing system and slurry properties, mixed support integrating slurry, and compressed air to support the excavation face. The mechanisms and potential causes of clogging are explained in detail, and the contributions of these mitigation measures to tunneling performance are discussed. By investigating the actual operational parameters of the slurry-shield TBMs, these mitigation measures were proven to be effective in mitigating the clogging potential of slurry-shield TBMs. This case study provides valuable information for slurry-shield TBMs involving tunneling in clay-rich sedimentary rocks.

Experimental study on flow behavior at open channel confluences

WANG Xiekang, WANG Xianye, LU Weizhen, LIU Tonghuan

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2007, Volume 1, Issue 2,   Pages 211-216 doi: 10.1007/s11709-007-0025-z

Abstract: Channel confluences are common in natural rivers and hydraulic engineering, and the flow behavior at confluences becomes very complex because of the interaction between the tributary and the main river. In this study, the experiments were performed in a combined flume with a 30º angle between the main and tributary flume located at Sichuan University. The velocity was measured by using a three-component acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) over a grid defined throughout the junction region. Based on the analysis of the velocity at the confluence, the distinctive characteristics of a channel confluence flow may be divided into several zones including a zone of separation immediately downstream of the junction branch channel, the maximum and minimum velocity regions at the upstream and downstream in the confluent channel, and a shear plane developed between the two combining flows downstream of the confluent channel. In addition, secondary circulations in different directions at the higher and lower velocity zones are observed as well.

An Intelligent Non-Collocated Control Strategy for Ball-Screw Feed Drives with Dynamic Variations

Hui Liu, Jun Zhang, Wanhua Zhao

Engineering 2017, Volume 3, Issue 5,   Pages 641-647 doi: 10.1016/J.ENG.2017.04.007

Abstract:

The ball-screw feed drive has varying high-order dynamic characteristics due to flexibilities of the slender screw spindle and joints between components, and an obvious feature of non-collocated control when a direct position measurement using a linear scale is employed. The dynamic characteristics and noncollocated situation have long been the source of difficulties in motion and vibration control, and deteriorate the achieved accuracy of the axis motion. In this study, a dynamic model using a frequency-based substructure approach is established, considering the flexibilities and their variation. The position-dependent variation of the dynamic characteristics is then fully investigated. A corresponding control strategy, which is composed of a modal characteristic modifier (MCM) and an intelligent adaptive tuning algorithm (ATA), is then developed. The MCM utilizes a combination of peak filters and notch filters, thereby shaping the plant dynamics into a virtual collocated system and avoiding control spillover. An ATA using an artificial neural network (ANN) as a smooth parameter interpolator updates the parameters of the filters in real time in order to cope with the feed drive’s dynamic variation. Numerical verification of the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed strategy is shown for a real feed drive.
